Hi! My name is Kayla and I’m writing to tell you my story of HOPE. I would like to share with you how the staff and programs at HOPE in Lancaster provided security for me and my sons. I am so thankful for this organization and to those who support their work.
Worry is a constant emotion that I’ve experienced a lot with this past year.I had to flee from an abusive relationship and although that was the right thing to do for me and my children, their father is no longer in the picture to share financial burdens. Recently, our utility bill increased, and at the same time, the family car needed repairs. These unexpected expenses caused me to fall behind on my rent. I have a secure, full-time job but still live paycheck to paycheck. I have been in tight spots before but have been able to pull myself out of most situations. This time I had no tricks up my sleeve and my sons and I were in immediate danger of being evicted.
Then everything changed, I was searching desperately online for help and saw HOPE’s Assistance, Resources and Referrals Program. It was hard for me to ask for help but I came to HOPE on my lunch hour with my documentation and reluctantly knocked on the door. HOPE’s Client Services Manager, Rhonda Hare answered the door and listened to me share my family’s need. HOPE paid my overdue rent payment, giving me and my sons the ability to stay in our home. I was grateful for the additional assistance of food that carried me through my immediate struggles. Those resources kept us from homelessness. But what really made an impact, was the birthday cake the volunteers included in my food order. Little did they know that my son’s birthday was in a few days and I had been worrying over how I was going to get him a cake. I know that seems insignificant compared to eviction, but it meant so much to my boy!
I have security and stability back in my life. My children and I have a home to live in and food on the table. Life hit me with so much in a short amount of time and I am eternally grateful to Rhonda, HOPE, and its volunteers. But I also know that I owe the world to the generous donors who make the programs at HOPE possible.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart,
